Chad refugee situation
2007-02-13
In february 2007 the refugee camps in eastern Chad were filled with people fleeing the Janjaweed militias in neighbouring Darfur in Sudan. Life was getting organised and in Touloum in the north they even built a mosque. Only Gaga camp in the central parts still received refugees. And they where coming, on foot or by horse or mule. Every tree or bush in the extremely dry surroundings were occupied by refugees seeking shelter from the hard sun. In the south in Gasira, a huge camp without refugee camp status close to the town Goz Beida, almost 20 000 internally displaced Chadians, or IDP’s as they are called, have set up camp. According to the UN the Janjaweed have left as many as 130,000 IDPs within Chad. This reportage was shot between february 13 and february 21 2007 in the eastern parts of Chad along the border with Darfur.
