Coca unions in Chapare - Bolivia
2009-03-17Yes to coca? No to cocaine? After three years with coca farmer Evo Morales as president of Bolivia the means to reduce coca cultivation have changed. Now, the farmers themselves verify production with the help of EU money. This is the latest strategy in Bolivia's struggle to control coca cultivation. Unions that organize the tropics farmers is president Evo Morales's political base. This summer he was re-elected as leader oftheir central organization. Instead of the government, as before,using violence and coercion, these farmers themselves ensure that production is restricted to the legal quota thats been negotiated to during the years of protests.
