2009-05-20–2009-09-10The foreclosure crisis in the United States has been described as a hurricane that never leaves the country. It's turning neighborhoods into ghost towns, where every second house is abandoned. The last wave was the worst: in July 2009 a homeowner received a foreclosure notice every seven seconds. 10 million homes may be lost until 2012.There is a growing movement in the US that's challenging the current order of things. In a neighborhood in South Minneapolis, a group of people who are about to loose their homes have come together. They help each other by blockading auctions and evictions, pay bills for the poorest when their water is turned off, and challenge the banks and politicians on the streets and in court. Their message: “The right to a home supercedes the economic rights of the bank.”Cheri Honkala, longtime housing activist and unofficial leader for the group in Minneapolis, sees opportunies for a massive movement now that the foreclosure crisis is hitting the middle class with full force.- What you see now is only the beginning.
