Forced to Migrate - Chile
2010-05-15–2010-06-08
Migration to the cities as a result of a earthquake in Chile On February 27th, a devastating magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck Chile, one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. Entire villages along the coast were wiped away by a giant tsunami that followed the quake and over 400 people were killed. Now people see themselves forced to migrate to the cities as a result of the earthquake. Previously prosperous fishing villages with tourism as a major source of income have been completely destroyed, and a harsh and humid winter where temperatures can fall to 5 degrees Celcius is on its way. Whole village populations are forced to leave for the cities for their survival. Chilean authorities estimate that more than 2 million have been affected by this natural disaster.
