Glacier researcher in Sweden

Not only in the Alps and in the Himalayas researchers are seeing steadily decreasing glaciers, a clear environment indicator. Now glaciers in the sub-arctic parts of Sweden are also melting away. This autumn several of Sweden’s 250 glaciers were measured with state of the art GPS. In wet and cold weather research is conducted by walking the glacier surface getting a profile of its size and structure. Data is later compared with last year’s data. Swedish researchers have been measuring glaciers since the 1940's and have the longest continuing series of data in the world. It shows that the Mikka glacier has been decreasing at a rate of ten meters a year during the last centaury. That’s too fast and probably due to climate change, according to researchers Per Holmlund and Gunhild Rosquist from the University of Stockholm.
