School for migrant children in Shanghai

2008-02-26

While migrant workers are praised for contributing to China's economic boom, their children have often been left behind by the cities their parents are helping build. But now China have published new regulations to give children of migrant workers equivalent treatment as urban students. We visited a school in the outskirt of Shanghai specifically for migrant workers, founded by a former migrant worker. City of Shanghai invests in schools for migrant children but there are still logistical problems where the schools are located in the suburbs far from the workplaces in central Shanghai. Because of this many migrant workers thus prefer to send their children to live with their grandparents when the kids reach school age.
