The jungle of Calais.

2009-12-08

In northern France, hundreds of migrants are living in harsh conditions while trying to enter the UK. UN High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR hopes that Sweden will contribute to a debate on the EU's migration policy.- By now all know the cops know me, "says Elias, 30.He left his job as a police officer in Kirkuk, Iraq, eight and a half months ago, to put himself in safety in Europe. Since April, he has been living in a temporary tent made of tarpaulin and fabric.A stone's throw away is the freeway and the harbor, where hundreds of trucks drive on board ferries to Dover every day. At some 20 occasions, Elias has tried to hide in the cargo compartments or at the wheel axles of a truck. Every time he has been revealed.- Most will be arrested, sometimes up to two days. Then then they release you and you return here to the "jungle," says Elias, looking out over the chaotic beach terrain. The surrounding area is home to over eight hundred migrants in similar conditions.
